The story of Papa Mitchell marks the beginning of our legacy. Mitchell Coleman, fondly referred to as "Papa Mitchell," was born in 1834, and his early life is not well-documented. However, he was purchased by J.F. Coleman during his early years in Virginia. Papa Mitchell was then brought to the "Coleman Plantation" in Fairfield County, where he worked for the Coleman family and hence adopted their name. There are new documents that details Papa Mitchell once lived on the Feaster plantation in the 1870s. While residing in the Blair area, Papa Mitchell met Betsey Moody during slavery and fathered two children Hattie and Lewis. Documentation of slave marriage was not documented during that time. Mitchell then married Hattie Goodwin, from the Gethsemane Church section of Blair. Together, they had three children: William, George, and Simon. While living on the Feaster plantation, Papa Mitchell and Rachel Foot had one son together that was Levi Coleman. After Hattie's passing, Papa Mitchell married Sallie Oglesby. They had six children: John, Mary, Mahaila, Robert, Sylvia, and Lizzie. With each generation our legacy grows…..
